In this section we we will try to describe the bulls that was used in our breeding program. The strong and weak points of each bull will be mentioned. No bull is perfect.

XY94-028 HENVIA MAGNUM

MAGNUM was bred by the well known Mr Thys Brits of Vryburg. As mentioned earlier we bought him at the dispersal sale of Mr Balloco as a mature bull. At that stage he was an  AI bull. On his sire side he came from the well known BRIGGS 681-2.

This Briggs bull and his sons bred very nice looking females with lots of milk. They had one weakness though. They tend to be on the "soft" side meaning there adaptability was under suspicion.

We decided to overlook this problem as it was overshadowed by the quality that he bred and by using TARZAN on these females the problem was rectified. We lost the bull not long after he arrived at the farm but we obtained some semen and were able to purchase a few of his progeny that turned out to be some of our best producers.

GANADO ROJO TARZAN GR92-024

We bought TARZAN at the dispersal sale of Mr Armand Balloco. At that stage he was already a mature bull and had a lot of progeny on the sale. Tarzan's dam was GR86-004 a Farmers Weekly cow. Every year Farmers

Weekly nominate an exceptional cow in the breed for this award. On the day of the sale we saw that TARZAN combine good with daughters of XY94-028 (also on sale) and as we bought both of them it was decided to continue with this combination. TARZAN was a large bull that moved very well and despite of his size he had no adaption problems into our set-up.

Unfortunate due to the size of our herd at that stage and the age of the bull we don' t have as many females of him in the herd as we would have liked to.

TIBRA OORLOG 5039 CBR05-039

This young bull that we kept is testimony to our belief namely, to stick to bloodlines that have worked in the past. He is a OORLOG PZ98-030 son out of a SP01-020 a cow bred by Mr Pip Hobson. The day we saw his dam's breeding we knew we were closer to finding the missing link. This cow had a lifetime of breeding in her background and above all she had the looks. How is this for royalty DJW93-062; SP89-034; DJW91-006; HJ88-032; MB84-021; SUPERMAN 1378; XY89-055 and BRIGGS 681-2 twice, all in one cow. This young bull gained weight when normal bulls tend to lose it, through wean shock, his first working season at the age of two and through shedding his teeth. We never gave him any supplementary feeding. Yet,he is not perfect, we would like him to have a stronger head and he could have been darker, but by using him we hope he will pass his ability to keep his condition on to his progeny.

SANTABEE 03 44 JP03-044

We bought this bull in partnership with Naude Pienaar from Mr JP Botma after the 2008 Kroon sale.

This bull was the best on offer at this sale but for some reason the buyers missed him and we were able to buy him on the farm after the sale. His grandfather is DJW94-096 a DJW91-006 son.

His grandmother on the sire side is the Consort champion female DJW95-005 out of the great Customline C911 and King A/4206. On his dam side he goes back to Santapine Gilmour.

ZONDAGSPAN OORLOG PZ98-030

OORLOG was a nice looking bull, dark, well muscled and very mobile. His sire was KTZ93-005, a bull that bred females of a high quality, well muscled but extremely fertile. It is just a pity that there were not more of his sons used in studherds. KTZ93-005 is out of the imported KUBECCA 888. On his dam side he was line bred to another good imported bull EL COLINA 490/3. Not many imported bulls made an lasting impact on the South African herd. Maybe the success of  OORLOG lay in the fact that he was bred out of the two that did.

ZONDAGSPAN PZ99-44

We were really fortunate to get hold of a half share in this bull. He joined us as a mature bull. 44 combine on his sire's side two of the great bulls in South African breeding, the great XY92-112 and BARON AT90-042.

He is a large bull but very mobile, at this early stage by the looks of his progeny he is one of the best bulls that we ever used. On his down side, he is not very dark and his sheath could have been better. Watch this space, we kept a son that possess everything that we want in a Santa Gertrudis.

VERBOS VB04-045

From the day I saw this bull I fell in love with him and soon after that I was able to buy him from my friend  John Schmidt of Tuinplaas. 45 is not a large bull, very dark and he well bred.

On the sire side of his breeding he goes back to DJ7151 of Mr. Gerrie de Jongh. This bull sired two great bulls, TOFFIE APPEL HB80-029 and PREDICTOR HB86-004. 45 is out of that PREDICTER line going down with XY92-112 to XY97-032 to his sire JR00-114, a halfbrother of JR00-108. SP89-034 GILMOR and BRIGGS 681-2 are also in his lines. Out of his first calf crop, first time heifers, we kept all the heifers.

ZONDAGSPAN PZ04-047

My friend Mr Naude Pienaar of Mafiking and I have a arrangement to swop the pick of our young bulls from time to time. PZ04-047 is a result of this arrangement. 47 is not one of those "pretty boy" kind of bulls.

He is a rugged bull and not very dark. I picked him mainly because of his breeding. His sire VV00-144 bred very well and is from some of the cornerstones of VALLEY VENTURE namely XY89-055 ,out of BRIGGS 681-2, and BARON AT86-042.His dam is from MB84-021, a very good son of HB80-029 TOFFIE APPEL. MB84-021 also bred HJ88-032 which did well for Me. Amy Williams.

SAN-JUAN GG96-013

I never saw this bull in real life but I also never saw a bad calf from him. This bull was bred by Mr Gawie Gertenbach from VREDE, a breeder that left a gap when he stopped breeding Santas. GG96-013 was slightly "off type" but he is breeding what we want. It is a pity that we only have semen because  AI is not always as successful, but we already have some very good females from of him. 13 is going back to SW86-008 and KING 55. An oldtime breeder of Santas once told me that SW86-008 was a bull way ahead of his time. GG96-013 is the sire of SD01-068, junior and breed champion bull at the 2004 National Championships

VERBOS 03 13 VB03-013

This bull has a VB brand but is Harm Marx breeding on both sides. John Schmidt bought his parents on the Roosterhoek dispersalsale.

The fact that this bull has DJW91-006 on the dam and the sire side makes him even more special. We already stated our desire to get more DJW91-006 blood in our herd and by using this bull we can do so. Another bull of which we think the word KUBECCA 888 also feature on his dam side. This bull has already proved himself in the Verbos herd and we are sure that he will make a lasting impact in our herd.

JI97-160 LACORNIE PORTO.

Porto was also bought as a mature bull and we were able to use him for three years.

A lot of his daughters were taken up in the herd and the first of them just weaned calves of exceptional quality.

Porto's sire is out of the nice looking JC89-051 of Mr Johan de Wet of Delareyville.

On the dam side he goes back to the very good cow SP88-001.

SANDFONTEIN SV98-139 CHOCOLATE

This bull is not getting the credit that he deserves. This old man is right up there with all the other exceptional bulls in the breed, past and present. We only own a share in this bull and was last in line to use him. He breeds them as we like them. He is a dark, streamline, well muscled bull out of some of the best looking cattle in the business like his sire SV94-107, the original CHOCOLATE, and his grandfather the very good bull JC90-001 bred by Mr Johan de Wet. His dam's side is just as impressive with HJ91-161 out of KUBECCA 888 and SUPERMAN 1378. At the age of 10 years he is still going strong. We collected a lot of his semen and it will be used extensively in our herd in years to come.
